Report: DOJ Opens Investigation Into Libra Token

DOJ Begins Investigation Into Libra
Libra, the crypto project that rose to fame thanks to the endorsement of Argentine President Javier Milei and the subsequent disaster, is reportedly under investigation by the Department of Justice (DOJ). According to local media, people familiar with the matter have confirmed that an investigation is in its early stages.

The probe was initiated by the agency's criminal division's anti-fraud unit, which is typically tasked with tackling complex economic crimes involving U.S. entities abroad.

The investigation follows an initial criminal report that implicated President Javier Milei, La Nacion reported, mentioning Kelsier Ventures’ Hayden Adams, KIP Protocol’s Julian Peh, Mauricio Novelli and Manuel Terrones Godoy, all of whom were involved in part with the Libra project.

The investigation could expand to include several U.S. government agencies, such as the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which is rumored to have orchestrated the matter, and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Libra, which some mistakenly believed to be a memecoin, was first shared on social media by Milei as a token to help Argentine companies get funding. This endorsement prompted thousands of people to get involved in the project, losing millions of dollars after the token’s price plummeted.

The case is also being investigated by Argentine authorities, who are looking into Milei’s relationship with the project’s founders, as well as possible abuse of power, influence peddling, and fraud.

While Milei is under internal investigation, he has denied any responsibility for Libra’s operations. The president has claimed that he did not endorse the project, that he only shared it, and that most of those affected were aware of the potential risks of the transaction, calling them “volatility makers.”
